AMG was involved in the development of the A-Class right from the start and their performance pedigree is never more apparent than in the stunning AMG Sport model.
Featuring the Dynamic Handling Package as standard, complete with sports suspension lowered by 15 mm, Direct Steering, and cruise control, it offers an even more agile, sporty driving experience. And the styling enhancements speak for themselves.
These include muscular AMG-designed aprons front and rear, plus AMG side skirts, and 18” AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels. Inside, Sports seats are standard. The multi-function steering wheel has perforated leather grip areas and a flattened lower section.
Our Test Drive
Are you finding it difficult to come to a decision about choosing from the current crop of fabulous new premium hatches? The A-Class makes a good case for itself with its stylish looks, inside and out, and comfort. It’s kitted up very well on gadgets with the best iPhone integration we’ve yet seen.
It’s rare that the motoring God’s align so that five all-new posh hatches go on sale within a year or so of each other. It started with the new BMW 1 Series; then a few months later a new Audi A3 then the Volvo V40 and a new Volkswagen Golf.
However not to be outperformed Mercedes launched the new A-Class and it’s a real rival for the premium hatchback establishment.
The A200 CDI AMG Sport is a ‘super model’ the one with the looks. Its aggressive front end with its wide grille and imposing three-pointed star badge, through heavily sculpted flanks to a tidy, pert rear, the A-Class is a real head turner.
The new car sits at least 16cm lower than the old model, its sporty look enhanced by a wheel-at-each-corner stance, Space inside is not generous , but there’s adequate leg and headroom in the back. Rear view visibility is not great however and the kids will find it difficult to see out of the back window with low seating positions.
The boot, at 341 litres, offers less space than in an A3 and 1 Series, too. Although the rear seats fold flat, you can’t do it from the boot – you have to do it from inside the car.
Style-wise, though, the inside is striking – our A200 CDI AMG Sport came with On-Demand Mercedes Benz central control unit for navigation, phone options, radio control, DVD player the list goes on. It’s eye catching in the front but it’s not distracting and it’s functions are superb.
The sports seats are exactly that. They hold you in position like a fly caught in a web. There is no sliding as you take those corners at (sensible) speed.
Our AMG Sport car has the firmest of three suspension settings (the softest being SE, then Sport then AMG Sport). It sat on beefy 18-inch alloys with fat, shallow tyres, and rode firmly over bumps and potholes.
You can thank the advanced four-link rear suspension for that. Grip levels are impressive.
Our A200 CDI AMG Sport came with Merc’s six speed gear box.
Our car cost around £25,000 – competitive with a similar A3 or 1 Series. Safety kit is high on the agenda, including Collision Prevention Assist on every model.
Other safety gadgets from the S-Class can also find their way on to an A-Class, including Pre-Safe, which prepares the car and passengers for an impending crash, and Attention Assist, to keep you awake. It’s further proof of the importance of hi-tech gadgets to posh hatch buyers.
Driving the A200 CDI AMG Sport was total driving pleasure. Some say a car is to get from A to B but if that’s the case then why not do it in style and with flare? People stared and admired as we drove past and we couldn’t quite help that feeling of egotistical delight. It’s what you pay for!
It’s not a family car. 3 kids can fit in the back and we know because we tried it and they loved it but it lacks the boot space to take all the accessories associated with taking kids on a day trip including space for a pram.
No this is a car for the successful professional, for someone who loves to drive and experience the sheer thrill of driving on the open road in a great car that will do most of what you want of it. It’s a match for any of it’s rivals and we would happily have it in our driveway.
Our Score: Good Egg!!
